Why Email?
Despite email being really old in internet terms, it’s still one of the best mediums to reach your clients and customers. You can build a big following on social media that engages with your content BUT there is always the risk that the platform decides to shake things up. That algorithm change could make it harder for your audience to find you. This is not some random scare-story, it happens all the time to creators on Instagram and Tik Tok.
So, having a strategy to convert your followers into email subscribers is critical to protect your business from the risk of going from superstar to completely invisible.
It’s not just about protecting yourself, email is a direct channel, so it gives you the ability to get to your following more consistently.
You get to talk to your audience in more depth.
Why do people sign up?
Just because you ask people to sign up, doesn’t mean people will. The famous phrase “what’s in it for me?” becomes critical. What will your audience gain from signing up, what will they miss out on?
Even more important, why would they stay subscribed?
You need to give people a compelling reason to sign up, what are you going to share with them that will make their lives easier or better?
How will you add value to their world?
Create a big promise for your email list and deliver on it in every email. Set out your stall. Who your list is for? Why they should sign up? What they gain from being a part of it?

How to make money from your list
We’ll cover this in a future edition, but you want to be clear in your own mind about your path to making money from your list. Without this, you can’t focus your efforts and target the value you deliver. For example, if you plan to monetise your list through sponsorship, you need to align the content so that it compliments a sponsors offering.
If you plan to sell your own services off of the back of the list, your content should dovetail into your paid services.
It’s important the reason people sign up and your monetisation strategy align, otherwise your unsubscribes and conversions will suffer.
